Sky Class has been studying the Harlem Renaissance over the past few weeks. In class we began by reading a number of picture books that explore the Harlem Renaissance including Harlem Renaissance Party, Sugar Hill, Harlem's Little Blackbird and more. In order to give kids some context about why the Harlem Renaissance is so important and how it came about we also read about and discussed slavery, the South after slavery and the Great Migration.

Once kids had some knowledge of the Harlem Renaissance they were encouraged to dive deeper through interactive learning centers. Over the course of four days students spent time in a listening center, a historical figures center, an art center and a mapping center with the goal of giving them a greater understanding of specific people, places, songs, dances, artworks and writing that came out of the Harlem Renaissance.

If you would like to get a taste for the Centers you can view our Google Slides below. Although you can't get the full experience, since there were activities to accompany the slideshows, it might be fun to view the slideshows again with your student.
