Our Trip to Senior Community Care Center

This week Sky Class had the chance to visit Senior Community Care Center in RTP. We were originally going to visit our senior friends in December, but the snow postponed our visit. Students originally were going to sing carols to our senior friends, but since the holiday season passed, we decided to sing 'What A Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong, one of the people we studied during our Harlem Renaissance unit.

In addition to singing to the seniors students worked on decorating bags for Urban Ministries of Durham with a few seniors. Urban Ministries of Durham provides a packed lunch for residents and community members in need. UMD loves being able to pack the lunches sandwich bags decorated with uplifting messages, so we had two students and two seniors sit at a table to work on decorating the bags. This gave our students a chance to get to know a few seniors more deeply. It was wonderful hearing them ask the seniors about their favorite colors, favorite movies, favorite things to do when they were 7 or 8 and more. We were so proud of every student for being so willing to engage with the seniors.

One final surprise was when one Sky Class student recognized his great grandmother! It was beautiful to watch the two embrace and made the trip more meaningful for all.
