A New Year of Writing Workshop

After beginning Writing Workshop as a whole class during the first few weeks of school, each language group is pursuing their own Units of Study.

Tom’s language group has been working on writing non-fiction books during their recent writer’s workshop sessions. Some have written about family trips, birthday celebrations, and unusual happening some have experienced. Once all the books have been completed and the students have conferenced with Tom about their books, the language group will have an informal ‘author’s tea’ in the library. Each student will read their book to the other students. Once everyone has read, the group will toast each other with a small cup of juice celebrating their accomplishments and share a small snack.

Joan's language group is focusing on pattern books. They are reading and discussing books which provide different patterns as examples. The students are coming up with the patterns they would like to use and trying them out in the books they are writing. They also will have a small celebration when they complete the unit of study.

Natasha’s language group has been working on writing small moment stories. The students began by making a bubble map of different events that happened during the past summer. They chose one of those events and made a second bubble map with one of the events in the center and words out to the side related to the small moment they planned to write about. Using this as a starting point, they began writing their books. They have each shared their first sentence with the class and are working on finishing their writing.
