On Monday, September 30, Sky Class students took a field trip to see the work of artist Nathan Sawaya. He is a New York artist who uses Lego bricks as the medium to build his large scale creations which include amazing detail. The traveling exhibit titled The Art of the Brick® is sponsored by the Alamance County Arts Council and is located in Graham, NC. Please visit artsalamance.com if you want to see more details about this exhibit. Students have been learning about Nathan and his work in art class. They were excited to see the pieces they had learned about. There was also a tent set up where students could make their own lego creations. It was an inspiring trip.
After the field trip, Sky students watched a video about Nathan Sawaya during art class. Then they each made 4 sketches of small sculpture ideas that they might make out of Legos. A few students even had time to practice making one of their ideas. Next week the students will create sculptures out of Legos in art class. The sculptures will be photographed and then taken apart so that the next group can use the Legos for their own creations.
